History
The year was 1765 when the first permanent French settlers came to Green Bay. Charles de Langlade and his family originally came from Canada and moved to Green Bay in 1765 to become the first European-American settlers in today’s Wisconsin. During the French and Indian War, the British gained control of Wisconsin by taking control of Green Bay in 1761. The French residents dealing in the trading post called the area as “La Bey”, but the British fur traders called it “Green Bay” due to the water and the shore showed green color in the early spring. By the time the 1850s came around the town had a small population of 1,923 people and was incorporated into a city in 1854.

Religion
Based on data provided by the American Religion Data Archive, Green Bay residents are mostly Catholic at 71.5% followed by Lutherans at 16.4%; the last 12% is composed of other Protestant denominations. The city is home to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay while the Cathedral of Saint Francis Xavier in Green Bay is considered the mother church of the diocese.
The Islamic community is served by the Islamic Society of Wisconsin while the Green Bay Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is also located in the city. The city’s Jewish residents is served by the Congregation Cnesses Israel Temple located on the east side of the city.
Economy
Known throughout the country as the “toilet paper capital” due to the number of paper industries in the city such as the Northern Paper Company, Fort Howard Paper Company and the Hoberg Paper Company. Based on recent data, the biggest employers in the city are: Humana, Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, Schneider National, Bellin Health, Georgia-Pacific, United Health Group, Aurora Bay Care Medical Center, Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, American Foods Group and St. Vincent Hospital.
Restaurants & Nightlife
A ‘Bravo – The Prosciutto stuffed fried chicken is absolutely amazing and comes with a pureed/riced cauliflower and roasted asparagus. Do also try the creamy smoked potato and for dessert the hot apple crisp. You won’t be disappointed.
Plae Bistro – Nice place, great atmosphere, amazing food and superb service. The rib eye steak is absolutely amazing. They offer the best French onion soup this side of town.
Pancake Place — Best place to have breakfast, generous portions, lots of football fans. Do try the eggs Benedict and the chicken dumpling soup. Place always gets packed so be prepared to wait.
Fun Things to Do in Green Bay
Lambeau Field and Green Bay Packers – if you like football visit the home turf of the Green Bay Packers. There is a guided tour of the stadium, including the atrium, a private suite as well as check out the player’s tunnel.
National Railroad Museum — If trains are your thing then you will definitely love the National Railroad Museum. The collection includes the Eisenhower collection of which the centerpiece is the British Railways steam engine used by the general during the Second World War.
Green Bay Botanical Gardens — The place offers a variety of rare and unique plants you will surely find something that is always in bloom. Check out the fun children’s garden that is comes complete with a tree house, a slide and even a maze.
